Save Energy to Save Money!
It is probably safe to bet that everyone in this world could benefit from a little extra money now and then. If you knew that just by adjusting some of your daily processes and the items that you use, that you could potentially save hundreds of money on your power bill each month, would you be excited? Saving energy not only helps our environment, it helps our wallets. Unfortunately, many of the ways we can use to save energy are so simple, that many people overlook them and instead spend their time searching for bigger and better ways to save money. This is really unfortunate; because the money saved as well as the energy saved can really add up over the years.
One great way to begin saving energy and money is to simply sit down and write a list. Think about all the little things you can do each day to save energy. More than likely, you will be surprised at all the ways you are wasting energy each day, and when you start thinking about the money involved, you may even get mad at yourself for not starting sooner! Often, the processes and appliances we use each day are not necessarily energy wasters; it’s just that the conditions they are used under cause them to work inefficiently. For example, you may have a central heating and air system, which in itself could save you more money that having separate heaters and air conditioners. However, if you allow the duct work to become clogged with dust and dirt, or simply block them with curtains or furniture, you are significantly hindering the airflow throughout your house. In turn, your heating and cooling system has to work much harder to push the air through these areas, wasting energy and money in the process. By keeping ducts clean and clear, the system is able to work at its peak efficiency, and you can focus on other ways to save energy. Another great example is holding the refrigerator door open way too long, definitely not an energy saver! If you have ever stood in front of your fridge trying to figure out what you want to eat, you have no doubt felt all the cold air hitting you. Essentially, you are letting all of the cold air out of the refrigerator, and when you close the door, it has to work that much harder to keep the air at the designated temperature in order to avoid spoilage. Another great power saver is simply to open your curtains and blinds! Why use electric light and lamps when the sun is still up and you can utilize that free solar energy?
There are even energy saving counterparts for most of your appliances. When the time comes to buy a new washer and dryer for example, the energy savers may be a little more expensive at the time of purchase, but will save you loads of energy and money in the long run. These are just a few of the millions of ways you can save energy each year, so it’s easy to see that you could be saving a lot more money if you make a little effort and take the extra time to actively save energy.
